It is considered the unofficial capital of winter sports. The central point of the city is the intersection of two streets: Krupówki and Kościuszki. In the north of Zakopane there is Gubałówka, and in the south there is the highest range of the Tatra Mountains, Giewont. The city lies on several streams that eventually flow into a tributary of the Biały Dunajec River – the Zakopianka River.
